Sean O'Casey
Biography:
Born 1880 in Dublin into an impoverished
Protestant family. He was not a healthy child. Trachoma permanently
damaged his eyesight and interrupted his education. Was briefly a part of
the Irish Citizen Army but quit in 1914 under protest against their
anti-union beliefs. His first publication was The Story of Thomas Ashe
(1917). It was about a friend in the Irish Citizen Army who died on hunger
strike. His first three submissions to the Abbey Theatre were rejected.
They finally accepted The Shadow of a Gunman (1923) and Juno and
the Paycock (1924). His later works became more experimental and
impressionistic. He was forced to leave Ireland after his anti-war drama The
Plough and the Stars (1926) provoked a full-scale riot. His later
works include The Silver Tassie (1929), Cockadoodle Dandy
(1949), and The Bishop's Bonfire (1955). He also wrote essays, such
as The Flying Wasp (1936), and was awarded the Hawthornden Prize in
1926. Died 1964. |
