One of the most important American playwrights of the 20th
century, Maxwell Anderson won a Pulitzer Prize for Both Your Houses (1933). His
crowning achievement was Winterset (1935), which popularized the use of blank
verse in contemporary drama and was the first winner of the New York Drama Critics Circle
Award (1935). This reference provides an introductory biographical essay, synopses of his
plays, critical overviews and stage histories of his works, and extensive annotated
bibliographies.
About the Author - Barbara Lee Horn is Associate Professor and Chair of
the Department of Speech, Communication Sciences and Theatre at St. John's University in
New York.
